Laconia's largest panigiri is not set up in a village square but at the foot of Taygetos, on the edge of the Byzantine castle-town of Mystras - and it has been held on the same ground for three hundred years.
Nothing on right now
May - September
Panigiria run from May to September, and the season peaks at Dekapentavgoustos - the Dormition, on 15 August - when most villages hold their feast. Each programme is set close to its own saint's day, so the list fills late and empties out of season.
The Mystras Panigiri runs from August 26 to September 2. In its present form it is a vast open-air bazaar, with a funfair and an enormous produce exhibition - less an evening with a band than an institution that gathers the whole prefecture for a week. Its continuity on the same site is what defines it: the fair predates the present settlement and survived beside the castle, today a World Heritage monument. Around it, Sparti and the villages of the Laconian plain keep their own days through the summer.
In the villages the character narrows: a live band, tables in the square, and a celebration that moves from the circle dances into zeibekika, with clapping and the smell of roasting meat off the spits. The Taygetos highlands and the villages along the eastern slopes hold the most traditional tone, while the plain - olive and citrus country, with Laconian oil and oranges the produce it is identified by - brings the feast closer to the town. Entry to the village feasts is free and there is no closing time.
