Ios concentrates its nightlife in the Chora - a hilltop village whose narrow, whitewashed alleys form a dense maze of back-to-back bars and clubs. Some have run for decades: Disco 69 on the central square since 1974 and the Irish-style Sweet Irish Dream since 1986. The island has drawn a young, backpacker and hostel-driven crowd since the 1980s, and is often described as 'what Mykonos was thirty years ago' - wilder, cheaper, and less polished.
By day the action moves to Mylopotas beach, where Far Out is the island's biggest beach club and books international DJs including Peggy Gou, Timmy Trumpet, Miss Monique and Fedde Le Grand. The season runs late May to mid-September and peaks in July and August. Traditional life continues alongside it - the feast of Agia Paraskevi on 26 July brings folk music and local wine to Chora.
