Mykonos built its global reputation on open-air clubbing. Cavo Paradiso, a clifftop venue above Paradise Beach opened in 1993, has hosted house and techno names from Carl Cox and David Guetta to Black Coffee and appears regularly in DJ Mag's Top 100 Clubs. The southern beaches were partying long before that - Paradise Beach has run beach parties since the late 1960s, and Super Paradise became one of Europe's first openly gay-friendly beaches in the 1970s, when Mykonos established itself as a Mediterranean LGBTQ+ destination.
The modern scene is beach-club led. Scorpios on Paraga (opened 2015) and SantAnna (opened 2017) programme DJs from the afternoon through sunset rather than the late-night-only schedule of Ibiza, with residencies such as Black Coffee anchoring the summer. XLSIOR, an international LGBTQ+ festival founded in 2009, brings tens of thousands to the island over a week each August. The season runs May to September and peaks from mid-July to late August.
