Kythnos

Kythnos music scene

Kythnos - also called Thermia, after the hot mineral springs at Loutra - is one of the quieter Cyclades, with no club scene and a profile built on Greek weekenders and sailors rather than international tourists. Its live music is almost entirely its panigiria: village feast-day festivals where local musicians play violin and laouto and islanders dance the Thermiotikos balos late into the night. The biggest fall around 15 August, with simultaneous all-night feasts at the churches of Panagia Kanala, Panagia tou Nikous near the capital, and Panagia Stratilatissa, and another on 20 July for Prophet Elias in Chora's main square.

A small programme of organised events fills out the summer: the MusiKythnos festival, launched in 2021, brings free classical and contemporary concerts, and the municipality's Kythnia programme stages traditional music, theatre and dance in Chora through July and August. Every panigiri and concert is on Mood.
