Tinos
Tinos music scene
Tinos's calendar turns on 15 August, when the island hosts Greece's largest religious pilgrimage: thousands of pilgrims converge on the Panagia Evangelistria church - inaugurated in 1830 - and the most devout crawl on their knees from the port up to the miraculous icon. The same date carries a second weight: in 1940, the Greek cruiser Elli was torpedoed off Tinos during the feast, the first hostile act against Greece in the Second World War, and it is commemorated each year.
Music runs through the rest of the summer too. The Tinos World Music Festival, founded in 2013 by the Cultural Foundation of Tinos, reinterprets traditional music from Greece, the Balkans and beyond, and is staged partly inside the Museum of Marble Crafts in Pyrgos - the historic capital of Greek marble sculpture, whose craft was inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list in 2015. Village panigiria with live music and dancing run most weekends from June to September. Every show is on Mood.
