Marseille hosted EuroPride in 2013 - the year France legalised marriage for all. The event was built, quite literally, around a wedding.
Nothing on right now
Pride events cluster in the summer, but every city sets its own dates - Marseille often runs its march and its parties a month apart from the next city on this list.
The city was among the first outside Paris to have a march of its own, in the early 1990s, as the Marche des Fiertés spread from the capital to the regions - Rennes, Nantes, Montpellier, Toulouse, Lyon, Lille, Bordeaux. In 1995 Interpride France was founded to coordinate the marches across cities. In 2013 the Lesbian & Gay Pride Marseille association took on EuroPride, held from 10 to 20 July: a few weeks after France opened marriage to same-sex couples, it focused on exactly that and celebrated what its organisers billed as the biggest gay wedding in Europe. The law had passed that May, after months of large demonstrations on both sides of the question.
Marseille is a Mediterranean port, France's second city by population, and its Pride keeps the rhythm of its summer: a march, floats and parties that run late, with the sea never far away. It is a mixed, lively city, and its queer scene runs year-round in venues around the centre, the Vieux-Port and the neighbourhoods above it. The list here shows LGBTQ+ friendly events as a whole and not only the days of the march; outside the summer it thins to the venues' standing nights.
